Straight answers
Nobody pays us to say who is cheapest.
- Is it free?
- Comparing is free and needs no account. Pro adds weekly re-priced shopping lists, drop alerts, price history, cart-to-trolley and barcode scanning, for $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year.
- Are you owned by a supermarket?
- No. Grovena is independent, and no retailer can pay to rank higher or be shown as the cheaper option.
- Where do the prices come from?
- Each retailer's own public online store, always attributed to the retailer it came from.
- How do you know it is the same product?
- An exact match shares a barcode. Anything merely similar is labelled, never counted as the same.
- Is every product at all three?
- No. Coles and Woolworths match on barcodes. Aldi publishes none and mostly sells its own brands, so it appears where we can match it honestly.
- Are the prices exact?
- They are an indicative weekly snapshot from one reference store per chain. Confirm at the checkout.
Why comparing works
The case for it isn't ours. It's the ACCC's.
Recommendation 2, February 2025
The ACCC wants price comparison to get easier.
It recommended the government require the largest chains to publish their prices online, and the very largest to open a live price API to third parties. On why:
Such a requirement would promote the ability of third-party price comparator businesses to develop effective models for the benefit of competition and consumers.
The government agreed in principle in March 2025; making it a requirement is still under consideration. No chain publishes that open price feed, so the comparison still has to be assembled the hard way. That is what Grovena does every week.
