Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Grovena: how prices work, what we track, and how to get the most out of the site.

About Grovena

What is Grovena?

Grovena is a free grocery price comparison tool for Australian shoppers. We track product prices across Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi so you can instantly see where your weekly staples are cheapest, and spot half-price deals before you shop.

Is Grovena free to use?

Browsing and comparing prices is free with no account required. We also offer a paid plan with additional features. Core price comparison will always be available for free.

Is Grovena affiliated with Coles, Woolworths, or Aldi?

No. Grovena is an independent price comparison service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or partnered with Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, or any other retailer. All product names, logos, brands, and trademarks are the property of their respective owners and are used here strictly for factual, comparative identification purposes.

How does Grovena make money?

Pro subscriptions, at $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year. That is the only money coming in, and none of it comes from supermarkets. We are not paid to list a retailer, we earn no commission on anything you buy, and no retailer can pay to rank higher or to be shown as the cheaper option. The order you see is the order of the prices we recorded.

Prices & Data

Where does your price data come from?

From each retailer's own public online store, the same pages any shopper can browse without an account. Every price is shown against the retailer it came from, and we compare like for like: same product, same size, or we tell you on the line that it is a close match rather than the same item.

Where do the product descriptions and nutrition come from?

The retailers and their suppliers write them, not us. We reproduce what they publish and name the retailer it came from above it, so you can see whose information you are reading. Where a description runs long we show the opening and link you to that retailer's own page for the rest. It is not always complete: some products have no description, and where two supermarkets sell the same item we show one of them rather than both. “Where to find it” is the retailer's own grouping for the product, such as Dairy then Butter & Margarine. It is not an aisle number. Aisle numbers and store layouts differ from store to store, so treat it as a starting point rather than directions.

Are the prices guaranteed to be correct?

Treat them as a guide, not a live feed. A price here is a snapshot from our last update, and supermarket prices change often. They also vary by store and region, and member pricing can differ again, so what you see at the checkout may not match. Always confirm the price with the retailer before you buy. Grovena is not responsible for pricing errors or for decisions made on the basis of an out-of-date price.

What is a “close match”?

Most comparisons are exact: the products share a barcode, so they are the same item. A card labelled “Close Match” is comparing similar but not identical products — a comparable substitute rather than the same item — so check the product names and sizes before treating the difference as a saving.

Close matches, and how your cart saving is worked out

How is my cart's saving worked out?

Each item is measured against the most anyone is charging for it: the dearest supermarket selling it right now, or its own pre-special price, whichever is higher. So you still save by picking the cheaper shop even when nothing is on special. Say an item is $5 at Coles, down from $8, and Woolworths has it at $9. Your saving is $4, being the $9 you would have paid at the dearest shop less the $5 you actually pay. The $3 markdown is not added on top: a saving is counted once, not twice. Where the comparison is against a close match rather than the identical product, we say so on the line. Items sold in different quantities, such as one shop pricing per kilo and another per piece, are left out rather than counted as a saving.

Close matches, and how your cart saving is worked out

How often are prices updated?

Every product is refreshed weekly, on Wednesday mornings, with Aldi refreshed again on the weekend. Fruit and veg is refreshed every day, because fresh produce re-prices mid-week where packaged groceries mostly do not. Specials cycles turn over on their own schedule, so a new special can be live in-store before it appears here.

What is unit pricing?

Unit price shows the cost per standard unit of measure: per 100g or per litre, for example. It's the most reliable way to compare value across different pack sizes. We show one wherever we can stand behind it — either the retailer's own figure, once it checks out against the pack size, or, on loose fruit and veg where a shop publishes no weight, an estimate from what the other shops say a piece weighs. Those are marked with “≈”. Where a retailer's figure and its pack size disagree, we show the price and no unit price rather than a number we cannot verify.

Why is a product only showing at one retailer?

Not every product is stocked by all three supermarkets, and ranges change every week. A retailer appears here when the product was in that chain's range the last time we scraped it, and drops off when it isn't. What we can't tell you is whether one particular store has it on the shelf today — the chains publish that too differently for us to say without guessing, so we don't.

Do you sell alcohol?

No. Grovena does not sell, supply or deliver anything — we publish prices collected from retailers' public websites, and you buy from the supermarket. In Australia alcohol may only be supplied to people aged 18 or over, and the retailer verifies that at the point of sale. We cannot check anyone's age and do not claim to. Sending a shopping list to a supermarket's trolley from Grovena transfers the items only: it buys nothing, and the retailer applies its own age checks before any sale.

Using the Site

Can I save or share a product comparison?

Each product has its own URL you can bookmark or share directly. With a free account you can favourite products and keep your cart across visits; price alerts, which email you when a watched product drops, are part of Pro.

Does Grovena have a mobile app?

Not yet — there is nothing on the App Store to download. Our site is fully responsive and works well on mobile browsers, and an iOS app is in development.

Pro & Billing

What do I get with Pro?

Five things. Saved shopping lists: keep the shop you actually do, and we re-price it every week so you know where it is cheapest this time. Price-drop alerts: pick the products you care about and we email you a weekly digest when any of them get cheaper. Price history charts on product pages, so you can see whether today's “special” is genuinely a good price. Sending your cart straight to your Coles or Woolworths trolley, which needs our Chrome extension on a computer. And barcode scanning: point your phone's camera at any barcode — in a shop, or on something already in your cupboard — and we'll pull up every retailer's price, whether it's on special, and its full price history in seconds. It's the fastest way to look a product up, because you never have to type a name. Scanning works for Coles and Woolworths products — Aldi doesn't publish barcodes, so their own-brand range can't be scanned. Comparing prices, searching and building a cart stay free, with or without an account.

All the guides

How much is Pro and how is it billed?

Two options, both in Australian dollars and GST inclusive: $5.99 per month, or $49.99 for a year — which works out at about $4.17 a month, so a year costs about three months less than paying monthly. Whichever you pick renews automatically until you cancel, and you can cancel at any time from your account. On the yearly plan we email you 14 days before each renewal, telling you the date and the amount, so it never arrives unannounced. Cancelling part-way through a year keeps Pro running until the end of the year you paid for rather than refunding the unused months — though if a renewal caught you out, see the refund answer below.

What happens if I cancel?

Cancelling stops any future billing but keeps Pro active for the rest of the period you have already paid for — the rest of the month on a monthly plan, or the rest of the year on a yearly one. Nothing is deleted — your alerts and favourites are still there if you resubscribe later.

Do you store my card details?

No. Your card is entered on Stripe's checkout, not ours, and never reaches our servers. We keep a Stripe customer reference, whether your subscription is active, and when it renews. Nothing else.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, and you do not have to argue for it. Three different things, with different rules. Billing mistakes are always refunded in full, however long ago: charged twice, charged after you cancelled, or charged when you had no subscription with us. If Pro does not do what the pricing page says it does, you are entitled to a remedy under the Australian Consumer Law and we add no window of our own to it — though those rights are not unlimited either: a guarantee applies for a reasonable period, judged by what Pro is and what it costs. If you simply changed your mind about a renewal, tell us within 7 days of a monthly charge or 14 days of a yearly one, and we will refund it and stop the subscription. The yearly window matches the reminder we email 14 days before every yearly renewal, so you get the same amount of time to act either way. Later than that we do not refund unused time as a rule — cancelling stops the next charge rather than returning the last one — but ask anyway and we will look at it. To ask, use the contact form and choose “Billing or refund”. Tell us the email address on the payment and roughly when it happened, which is enough for us to find it. We aim to reply within a day or two. Once we approve a refund it goes back to your original card through Stripe, and how long it takes to appear is set by Stripe and your bank, commonly 5–10 business days.

I don't recognise a charge from Grovena

If it is us it will be $5.99 (the monthly plan) or $49.99 (the yearly plan), and the description on your statement will name Grovena. If someone else in your household subscribed, that is the most common explanation. Either way, contact us before disputing it with your bank. We can usually identify a charge quickly and start a refund the same day we confirm it, whereas a bank dispute takes weeks and locks the payment while it runs.

How do I cancel?

From your account: Profile → Subscription → Manage billing, which opens Stripe's secure portal where you can cancel, change your card or download invoices. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the current period and you keep Pro until then. If you cannot get into your account for any reason, contact us and we will cancel it for you.

Privacy & Accounts

Do I need an account?

No account is needed to browse, compare prices, or build a cart to see what you'd save. That cart just won't be there if you come back later. Creating a free account keeps your cart and lets you save favourites; Pro adds saved shopping lists that tell you the cheapest way to buy them each week, price-drop alerts, price history, sending your cart to a real trolley, and barcode scanning.

How do I delete my account?

Go to your account settings and choose to delete your account. It happens straight away and it is not a soft delete: your profile, carts, favourites, saved shopping lists, price alerts, game records, cart transfer history and any notification tokens for your devices all go. If you signed in with Apple, we also ask Apple to revoke that sign-in, so Grovena stops showing up in your Apple ID settings. A few things stay behind, and we would rather tell you than surprise you — any message you have sent us through the contact form, Stripe's own billing records, which it has to keep for tax purposes, and whatever our hosting and analytics providers hold, which was never part of your account. A Pro subscription started on our website is cancelled as part of the deletion.

Can I see what you hold about me, or get it corrected?

Yes. Email privacy@grovena.com.au and ask — you don't need a reason and it doesn't cost anything. We'll come back to you within 5 business days and answer properly within 30. The same address works if you want something corrected, or if you think we've mishandled your information and want to complain; if our answer doesn't satisfy you, you can take it to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. Some of it you can just do yourself: your display name and password are editable in your profile, alert emails switch off in your notification settings, and you can close your account whenever you like. Your email address is the one thing you can't change yourself after signing up — ask us and we'll fix it.

Does Grovena track my shopping?

Some of it, and here is exactly what. We use Microsoft Clarity to see how the site is used — which pages people reach, what they search for, which products and prices they look at, and where something on screen is not working. That includes a recording of what happens on screen, with your account pages blanked out of it. No retailer ever finds out what you looked at, we never sell your data, and we never use any of it to advertise to you. The one advertising request the analytics tag makes is blocked by our own security policy, on every page. Beyond that it is the ordinary stuff a site cannot run without: our hosting provider records each request, including your IP address and the page you asked for, which we use to fix faults and block bots. And if you have an account, the things you asked us to keep are kept: your cart, favourites, saved lists, alerts and — if you use it — what happened when you sent a cart to a real trolley. The Privacy Policy sets all of it out, category by category.
